How do I add someone's name to my DM?

On Pro, put {name} or {username} in your DM. Waveloop fills in each person's first name or username, or "there" when Instagram doesn't share it.

Put {name} or {username} in your DM, and Waveloop fills it in for each person as the DM goes out. It works on the Pro plan and up, on comment, DM keyword and story reply automations.

  • {name} becomes their first name, from their Instagram profile. Titles are skipped, so "Dr. Maya Patel" becomes "Maya".
  • {username} becomes their Instagram username, without the @.
  • "there" is used when Instagram doesn't share it, so "Hi {name}" reads "Hi there".

Add it to a message

  1. Open the automation and go to the message step.
  2. Click where you want the name in your text.
  3. Click Insert name or Insert username.
  4. Save.

The preview fills in a sample person, so you can see how it reads. You can also type the tokens yourself. Capital letters don't matter, so {Name} works too.

Where it works

Public replies under the comment aren't filled in, so keep the tokens to your DMs.

Name or username?

On comment DMs, {username} always works, because every comment carries the username. {name} comes from the person's profile, and Instagram may not share it for someone who has never messaged you. Then the DM says "there".

On Free

On Free, you see one Insert name or username button with a Pro lock. If you move back to Free, DMs that already use them keep working.

Write the sentence so "there" reads well too. "Hi {name}, here's your guide" works either way.
